How is a liquidation price calculated on Hyperliquid?
Hyperliquid derives the maintenance margin from each market's maximum leverage rather than applying one flat rate. The maintenance margin fraction is half the initial margin required at that maximum. A market capped at 40x needs 2.5% initial margin at the cap, so its maintenance margin is 1.25%. A market capped at 5x needs 20%, so its maintenance margin is 10%. Liquidation triggers when the equity backing the position falls to that level. For a long, the trigger sits near entry price × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance margin fraction); for a short, near entry price × (1 + 1/leverage − maintenance margin fraction).
This is why an identical 10x long liquidates much closer to entry on a thinly traded altcoin than on BTC. The leverage you picked is the same, but the maintenance floor underneath it is several times higher. The calculator above runs the same arithmetic against whatever entry, leverage, and side you enter. For the full walkthrough with worked examples, see how liquidation works on Hyperliquid.
Does cross margin or isolated margin change my liquidation price?
Yes, and the difference is what collateral the position can draw on. In isolated margin only the amount you assigned to that trade backs it, so the liquidation price is fixed the moment you open the position and your loss is capped at that assigned margin. In cross margin your whole account balance backs every open position, which pushes each individual liquidation price further from entry but lets one losing trade consume the collateral holding up the others.
Adding margin also behaves differently. Topping up an isolated position moves only that position's liquidation price. Depositing into a cross account moves the liquidation price of every position at once.
